Abnormal course of fibromuscular dysplasia of renal artery

Fibromuscular dysplasia is a congenital abnormality of arteries. We present our experience with acute renal artery thrombosis caused by fibromuscular dysplasia in a young man. This patient was sent to our department from a county hospital where he had been treated for 14 days. His symptoms were very unspecific and resembled acute renal colic. On Doppler sonography revealed arterial flow only in the upper part of the left kidney. On DSA, fibromuscular dysplasia with stenosis and thrombus in the left renal artery were described. Functioning arteries were found only in the upper part of the kidney. We discuss the importance of DSA and Doppler sonography. The patient was treated only pharmacologically and by rest. We also present the results of followup imaging after two years.
