Nuclear medicine imaging has been at the disposal of urologists for a number of decades. Alongside scintigraphy, positron emission tomography combined with computed tomography (PET/CT) is becoming widely available for clinical use. A range of radiopharmaceuticals has been reported in recent scientific literature, some of which are now available in the Czech Republic. The significance of this trend is that new and more effective diagnostic modalities have become available for use by practitioners. The aim of this brief communication is to provide a basic review of modern nuclear medicine techniques for imaging prostate cancer. The properties of radioactive...

Renal tumors are a highly heterogenous group of tumors which makes their diagnosis increasingly complicated. The use of molecular and genetic techniques has resulted not only in the improvement of classification and differential diagnosis, but has also led to a better understanding of the biological behavior of these tumors. The increasing use of targeted therapy makes precise diagnosis of each lesion important and in the future it may become a crucial tool for the selection of proper treatment.

Aim:The aim of this study was to evaluate surgical outcomes of laparoscopic radical prostatectomy and compare them to retropubic radical prostatectomy. Methods:A cohort of 225 patients was evaluated. All patients underwent radical prostatectomy between January 2008 and April 2010. Retropubic radical prostatectomy was performed in 125 cases and laparoscopic surgery was performed in 100 cases. Surgical results and complications were compared between the two methods. In addition, the first and the last 25 laparoscopic surgeries were compared. Results:The median follow up time was 14 months, the median age was 62...

Aim:The aim of the study was to determine the natural history, recurrence and progression risk after intravesical adjuvant bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) immunotherapy in patients with T1G3 urothelial bladder tumors.Methods:Ninety-two patients diagnosed with a T1G3/ high grade tumor between 1990 and 2008 were evaluated. All patients received a full induction course (i.e. 6 instillations) of BCG. A subgroup received maintenance BCG treatment following the full initial induction course. The outcomes for each group were compared. Results:The median follow-up time was 4.8 (0.3-18.7) years. Recurrence was confirmed...

Aim:Ureteral obstruction is a frequent complication in patients with malignant diseases. The most frequently used solutions are a ureteral stent, nephrostomy or open surgical intervention. An extra-anatomic stent (EAS) represent an alternative method for urinary diversion in patients with advanced malignancy and short life expectancy. The aim of this paper is to verify the efficacy of using an EAS for urinary diversion and to evaluate the quality of life (QoL) following the procedure. Methods:The study included 11 patients (8 men and 3 women), with a mean age of 64.5 years (38-80 years). Five patients with advanced bladder...

We present a case report of a patient with malignant retroperitoneal liposarcoma, which was initially diagnosed as a benign tumor of the lower pole of the kidney based on imaging and biopsy. Despite this, the patient underwent surgery which resulted in a definitive histological diagnosis of malignant retroperitoneal liposarcoma.
Myoglobinuria as a manifestation of rhabdomyolysis following extreme physical exertion

Myoglobinuria refers to higher than normal physiological concentrations of myoglobin in the urine, usually causing a dark red discoloration. Due to its small molecular weight, myoglobin is readily excreted in the urine during rhabdomyolysis. In acidic urine myoglobin reacts with Tamm-Horsfall proteins which can bind to the surface of the tubular cells causing damage. Myoglobinuria is the external manifestation of rhabdomyolysis, a syndrome characterized by necrosis of striated muscle cells and release of their content into the circulatory system. The severity of the disease can vary in form from asymptomatic to life-threatening with acute renal failure...
