Chromophobic kidney carcinoma is one of the kidney carcinomas which can be easily verified by histology. In spite of its rather rare occurance (about 5% of all kidney carcinomas), chromophobic kidney carcinoma represents - together with the clear cell carcinoma and papillary carcinoma - the third most frequent carcinoma in this area. The exact histological classification is extremely important because - in comparison with the clear cell carcinoma and papillary carcinoma - the prognosis of chromophobic kidney carcinoma is significantly better. It has been proved that the generalization of this type of carcinoma occurs much later, and, unless a sarcomatous variant is concerned, 80% patients survive for more than 5 years.
Not only has the chromophobic carcinoma specific behaviour, but it has a specific histological structure, histochemical, ultrastructural and cytogenetic characteristics as well.
