The expression of potassium channels in human detrusor muscle

Potassium channels are proteins, the function of which is to transport potassium ions accross the plasma membrane of cells. Their important function was proven especially in muscular and neural cells, where they participate in an important way in the regulation of cellular excitability. The aim of the work is the imunohistochemical detection of potassium channels in the tissue of human detrusor muscle. Detrusor biopsies of 16 patients altogether were investigated by polyclonal antibodies against potassium channels subtypes KCa (calcium-gated potassium channels) and KV (voltage-gated potassium channels). Immunohistochemically we proved an excessive expression of SK-3 and BK channels, no difference in the distribution of different classes of receptors depending on the localization of biopsy was detected.
The detection of the presence of potassium channels in the human detrusor muscle tissue opens new opportunities in therapeutic management of detrusor contractility.
