The fast track postoperative protocol, also referred to as the method of accelerated rehabilitation, or ERAS (enhanced recovery after surgery), includes complex, modern procedures aimed at diminishing the frequency of postoperative complications, reducing the length of hospital stay and enhancing a patients comfort. It is characterized by a multidisciplinary approach which involves a urologist, anesthesiologist, nurse, physiotherapist and sometimes also nutrition specialist. Although, there is clear evidence that this method is beneficial, the majority of urology departments have not adopted this approach yet.

The goal of this communication is to describe the use of the currently available molecular markers and selected clinical biomarkers in predicting the effectiveness of systemic therapy for the treatment of metastatic renal cell carcinoma (mRCC).A literature review was performed using PubMed database, as well as resources in local publications and periodicals. The molecular markers detected in tumor tissue, blood and urine (tab. 1) are discussed, as well as clinical parameters used to evaluate the effectiveness of previously administered treatment.Specific predictors of the effectiveness of biological therapy in mRCC have not yet been identified....

Aim: The aim of our study was to assess the precise tumour localization in radical prostatectomy specimens. Based on the study outcome, we are proposing a modification to the prostate biopsy strategy with the goal of increasing the tumour detection rate.Material and methods: Between May 2008 and June 2011 we evaluated whole mount section of 33 prostates (specimens were obtained by 23 radical retropubic and 10 robot-assisted radical prostatectomies). Tumour localization was assessed according to McNeal's prostate zonal anatomy scheme. Statistical analysis was performed using a chi-square test. Results: In all...

Aim: Since its introduction in 1992, laparoscopic adrenalectomy has virtually replaced the open adrenalectomy. The Department of Urology of the Olomouc University Hospital has been one of the first to routinely perform this procedure in the Czech Republic. The aim of this study was to review outcomes of patients undergoing laparoscopic adrenalectomy at this Center. Methods: We performed a retrospective analysis of the medical records from patients who underwent laparoscopic adrenalectomy at the center from 1998-2012.Results: Over the 15-year period, a total of 250 laparoscopic adrenalectomies were performed....

Introduction: Patients' quality of life is becoming the center of attention and an increasing number of authors have addressed this topic in the recent years. The aim of today's medical care is not only to increase life expectancy, but more importantly, improve or slow down the deterioration of the quality of life of people with chronic diseases, with the emphasis being placed on the factors which influence the subjective perception of quality of life.Aim: The objective of this research was to assess the quality of life in patients undergoing chronic dialysis. In this study we evaluated the patients perception of key...
Clean intermittent catheterization in patients following spinal cord injury: A prospective study evaluating the correlation between education and incidence of complications

Aim: Modern health care relies on the involvement of the patient in the treatment process. Implementation of new medical and nursing practices necessitates that sufficient time is devoted to patient education. Well managed educational process is beneficial for both the patients and their caregivers and may lead to a reduction in the incidence of treatment-induced complications. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of the method of education on the incidence of complications associated with clean intermittent catheterization (CIC) in patients after spinal injury. Methods: This is a prospective randomized study. The...

Abdominoscrotal hydrocele is a rare disease of unknown etiology. It consists of the scrotal and abdominal sacs that communicate though a patent hole in the groin, shaped like an hourglass. The occurrence of this condition is very rare in children, however in adult men this finding is extremely unusual. Diagnosis is based on clinical examination and ultrasound or CT. A confirmed diagnosis necessitates surgical treatment. In this case report we present a case of voluminous abdominoscrotal hydrocele in an adult 21 year old male. In this case, the problem was discovered after reaching sexual maturity. We describe the history, physical examination, clinical...
Ureteral endometriosis

This case report describes a rare instance of a patient presenting with asymptomatic incidentally detected hydronephrosis of the left kidney, with reduction of the parenchyma to 5 mm. Based on paraclinical examinations, a preliminary diagnosis of a ureteral tumor of unknown etiology was made. The dynamic renal scintigraphy verified kidney malfunctioning and the patient was indicated for left side nephrorureterectomy. Biopsy of the ureter yielded a surprising conclusion: extrinsic endometriosis of the distal ureter, non-infected kidney with tubulointerstitial nephritis and hydronephrosis.
