Introduction: Kidney tumours form a broad spectrum of histopathological entities. The last WHO classification was formulated in 2004. An actualized version was published in October 2013 by International Society of Urological Pathology. We present a summary of the substantial changes made, from the clinicians point of view.Overview: Five epithelial tumours: tubulo cystic renal cell carcinoma (RCC), acquired cystic disease-associated RCC, clear cell (tubulo) papillary RCC, MiT family translocation RCCs (in particular t(6;ll) RCC), and hereditary leiomyomatosis RCC syndrome-associated RCC, were added to the classification. In...

Ces Urol 2014, 18(1):21-25 | DOI: 10.48095/cccu2014003

Aim:The goal of this study was to examine if determining [-2]proPSA levels and calculating the Prostate Health Index (PHI) could improve overall sensitivity and specificity of this marker in the diagnosis of prostate cancer compared to standard markers (PSA and %freePSA), and propose an optimal PHI cut-off.Methods:A group of 76 patients with suspected prostate cancer, who were scheduled to undergo prostate biopsies, was tested to determine the total PSA, freePSA and [-2]proPSA levels, calculated %freePSA and Prostate Health Index (PHI). Biomarkers were determined using chemiluminescent technology on a Dxl 800 (Beckman Coulter,...

Aim:This work aims to present the advantages of histological processing using whole-mount sections (WMS) and to compare it with other methods commonly used for evaluation of tissue removed during the course of a radical prostatectomy (RP).Material and methods:All cases of carcinoma of the prostate, treated by radical prostatectomy, and processed using WMS, August 2009 to March 2013 were histologically re-evaluated. The following parameters were analyzed: histological type, Gleason score, presence of a tumour in the apex, multicentricity, infiltration of the seminal vesicles, presence of positive resection margins and extracapsular...

Monitoring the loss of botulinum toxin during intradetrusor administration - pilot study results

Ces Urol 2014, 18(1):33-39 | DOI: 10.48095/cccu2014005

Aim:The aim of this study was to examine the possible loss of the onabotulinumtoxin A (onaBTA) in the course of endoscopic injection into the detrusor muscle in patients with neurogenic detrusor overactivity. Methods:The study group included 11 patients with neurogenic detrusor overactivity who failed standard treatment with anticholinergics. Patients were treated with endoscopic injection of 200 U onaBTA divided into 30 injection sites using a 23 G flexible endoscopic needle. In order to determine the content of onaBTA lost during endoscopic administration, methylene blue dye was added to the solution of the drug. The concentration...

Ces Urol 2014, 18(1):40-43 | DOI: 10.48095/cccu2014006

A case report of a 70-years old female presenting with the complaint of dyspepsia, diagnosed with an incidental finding of a pelvic retroperitoneal tumour, 12 cm in diameter. Dilatation of the upper urinary tract was diagnosed using ultrasound. Subsequent computer tomography examination revealed a huge retroperitoneal tumour, which was thereafter completely removed. The histological analysis confirmed a benign schwannoma with negative surgical margins. The patient is followed-up regularly in the regional outpatient urology clinic. She is without complaint with a good prognosis.

Multiple tumors, as defined by the criteria of the IARC (International Agency of Research on Cancer), must have an origin in different organs, must have a different histological structure, and must not be a metastasis from another primary tumour. According to the time of development, multiple tumors are divided into synchroneous or asynchronous. The most frequent multiple tumors are duplicate, triplicity is rare, and development of more then three tumors in a single patient is very rare. We present a case report of a patient with three synchronous urological malignancies, prostate adenocarcinoma, renal cell carcinoma of the right kidney and urothelial...

Ces Urol 2014, 18(1):49-52 | DOI: 10.48095/cccu2014008

We present a rare case of metastatic dissemination of urothelial carcinoma into the renal parenchyma. Radical cystectomy with righL nefroureterectomy was performed in a 60-years-old man. Dense cyst of the left kidney was described on CT examination. Therefore a partial left side nephrectomy was performed in the second session. The histological diagnosis of a solitary metastasis of the urothelial carcinoma was made.

Squamous cell carcinoma of the renal pelvis

Ces Urol 2014, 18(1):53-56 | DOI: 10.48095/cccu2014009

We would like to present a case report of a 41-year-old female, with chronic right upper pole nephrolithiasis who underwent nephrectomy due to pyelonephritis with abscess formation. An incidental finding of advanced keratinizing squamous cell carcinoma of the renal pelvis was diagnosed in the surgical specimen.

Ces Urol 2014, 18(1):57-60 | DOI: 10.48095/cccu2014010

We presenL a case report of a 49year-old patient with ischemia of the left kidney due to a blood clot emboli of the renal artery. The patienL underwent a minimally invasive radiological intervention. The blood clot was removed using retrograde catheterization via the femoral artery. This condition developed due to congenital hypercoagulopathy caused by a homozygous mutation in the gene encoding for prothrombin (G20210A).

Leydig cell tumor

Ces Urol 2014, 18(1):61-64 | DOI: 10.48095/cccu2014011

We report about a case of a Leydig cell tumor, which is one of the most common nongerminal tumors of the testis. Endocrine symptoms, which develop due to the tumors hormonal activity, can be the only sign of the disease. The overproduction of hormones leads to the hypogonadism and can also lead to infertility. Some Leydig cell tumors are malignant with metastatic potential. The treatment is surgical and prognosis depends on early diagnosis.

Ces Urol 2014, 18(1):65-68 | DOI: 10.48095/cccu2014012

We present two case reports of patients with Leydig cell tumors of the testis. These were the only two cases diagnosed at our department since 1989. The first patient had a benign form, and the second patient, an elderly man, had a tumor of uncertain biological character. We describe the diagnosis, treatment and surveillance strategies. In addition, we discuss the possibilities of organ-sparing surgery. We point out the need for monitoring all patients for possible malignant transformation of originally benign forms of this tumour.
